
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

What is boiler pressure?
In a sealed central heating system, water circulates between the boiler, pipework and radiators.
The system must contain enough water and pressure to move that heated water around the property effectively. The boiler’s pressure gauge shows the pressure inside this sealed heating circuit.
This is separate from the mains water pressure supplying your taps and showers.
If the boiler pressure becomes too low, the appliance may stop operating or display a fault code. Boiler lockout is a protective function that prevents the appliance from continuing to run when it detects certain faults.
What pressure should a boiler be?
Many sealed heating systems should read approximately 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is switched off and the system is cool. The reading may rise when the heating is running because water expands as it becomes warmer.
The correct range can vary between manufacturers and models, so your boiler manual should always be treated as the main guide.
Contact an engineer if the pressure regularly falls below the recommended range or rises sharply when the heating is operating.
Why does boiler pressure keep dropping?
There are several possible causes.
1. A leak in the heating system
A leak allows water to escape from the sealed system, gradually lowering its pressure.
The leak may be found around:
- Radiator valves
- Pipe connections
- Towel rails
- Visible central heating pipes
- The boiler
- Pipework beneath floors or inside walls
Not every leak creates a visible puddle. A slow leak may evaporate or soak into surrounding materials before enough water collects to become obvious. Look for damp patches, rust marks and signs of water around radiator connections.
Do not remove the boiler casing to look for an internal leak.
2. Radiators have recently been bled
Bleeding a radiator releases trapped air. This can improve circulation and help a cold radiator warm more evenly, but it may also lower the system pressure.
After bleeding radiators, check the boiler gauge once the system is cool. You may need to repressurise the boiler according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
A pressure drop following radiator bleeding does not necessarily indicate a fault. However, the pressure should remain stable after the system has been correctly refilled.
3. A faulty pressure relief valve
The pressure relief valve is a safety component that releases water if the pressure inside the heating system becomes excessive.
If the valve becomes faulty or does not reseal correctly, water may continue dripping from the discharge pipe. This pipe normally runs from the boiler to an outside wall.
A damp or dripping discharge pipe can indicate that the pressure relief valve requires professional attention.
Do not block, cap or alter the discharge pipe.
4. A problem with the expansion vessel
Water expands as it heats. The expansion vessel absorbs this increase in volume and helps keep the system pressure stable.
If the vessel loses its air charge or its internal diaphragm fails, the boiler pressure may rise significantly while the heating is on and fall again as the system cools. Water may also be released through the pressure relief valve.
Expansion vessel testing and repair involve internal boiler components and should be completed by a qualified engineer.
5. Air is leaving a recently filled system
A newly installed, repaired or refilled heating system may contain trapped air.
As the air moves through the system and is released, the pressure can fall slightly. A small initial adjustment may therefore be normal.
Continued pressure loss after the system has settled should still be investigated, as it could indicate a leak, insufficient expansion capacity or a component fault.
6. An internal boiler fault
Pressure loss can sometimes be caused by a component inside the boiler.
Because the boiler casing should not be removed by the homeowner, this type of problem may not be visible. An engineer can test the boiler, pressure relief valve, expansion vessel and internal connections to identify the cause.
Gas boiler repairs must be carried out by an engineer who is appropriately registered and qualified for the work.
Is it normal for boiler pressure to drop slightly?
A very small change over a long period does not always mean there is a serious fault.
Pressure can change because:
- Radiators have been bled
- Air has left a recently filled system
- The heating system has cooled
- Maintenance or repair work has been completed
What is not normal is needing to restore the pressure repeatedly.
If you are topping up the boiler every few days or weeks, arrange an inspection. Continually adding fresh water does not solve the underlying cause and can dilute the corrosion inhibitor protecting the heating system.
Can you repressurise a boiler yourself?
Many boiler manufacturers provide instructions allowing homeowners to repressurise their own appliance using its filling loop or built-in filling mechanism.
However, the method varies between boiler models. Always:
- Switch off the boiler and allow the system to cool.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Identify the correct filling mechanism.
- Add water slowly while watching the pressure gauge.
- Stop at the pressure stated in the manual.
- Make sure the filling controls are fully closed.
- Restart the boiler according to its instructions.
Do not attempt the process if you cannot confidently identify the correct controls. Never remove the boiler casing or adjust internal components.

Without dismantling anything, you can check:

- Whether the pressure changes significantly when the heating warms up
