How do air source heat pumps work

If you’re looking for an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional central heating systems, an air source heat pump might be perfect for you.

But how do heat pumps warm your home if they’re not relying on gas, oil or electricity from an energy supplier? Read on to learn all about air source heat pumps and why so many people are choosing them today.

How do air source heat pumps warm your home?

Heat pumps are unusual because they don’t heat your home by generating energy. Instead, they transfer warmth from outside the home to inside. They can even do this on days when it’s as cold as -15°C outside, since some heat energy is still present in the air.

Air source heat pumps take that warmth from the air.

You then have the option of blowing hotter air from the pump into your home (air to air heat pumps), or using that heat to warm water for a wet central heating system (air to water heat pumps). The benefit of the latter method is that it can warm your water too.

Heat pumps do require electricity to run, but they typically give you back 2-4 times as much energy as they use.

What’s the technology inside an air source heat pump?

The tech inside an air source heat pump is a bit like what’s inside your refrigerator. But instead, it works in reverse, warming rather than cooling your home.

First, the air from outdoors moves over a heat exchange surface. Then, the heat from this air warms up a refrigerant liquid, causing it to become a gas. That gas goes through a compressor to increase its temperature. Then it’s time for the warmed refrigerant gas to go to another heat exchanger, which can produce either warmed air or warmed water to heat your home.

Can an air source heat pump also cool your home?

Yes, some air source heat pumps can also cool your home by transferring the warmth to the outside. However, this works better with air-to-air heat pumps. With an air-to-water heat pump, you might end up with cold radiators, which could create condensation problems. It’s best to check with a professional heat pump engineer to decide on the best option for your home.
